Mating Behaviors and Costs of the Water Strider
The Water Strider
Being able to skate across still water is characteristic of Water Striders (Heteroptera: Gerridae). Due to their large surface area to weight ratio, these insects rely on the surface tension of the water to stay on the water's surface. Despite this unique ability, the most interesting aspect to these insects is likely their unique mating habits and rituals (Ingram, 2013).
Mating GoalsMating rituals in the water strider arose from a clash of reproductive goals between males and females (Ingram, 2013).
